Welcome to the City

Welcome to the city
Where the sirens sing you to sleep
Underneath the smog ridden sky
Where the blinking of walk signs sync with the blinking of the stars
Where men bleed and children freeze
By the hands of a god neither believe in

Welcome to the city
Where the dull hum of the passing vehicles replaces the calming pattern of ocean waves
Where the grass grows where the sun doesn’t shine
And the concrete glistens in the light

Welcome to the city
Where the raindrops patter against your window with delicate vigor
So it seems as though they are pleading to get in
Where a face once seen may never be met again on any other day
Where the beauty is in the walls that confine you

Welcome to the city
Where things are seen that are better forgotten
And the chirping of birds is replaced with car horns
Where the towns on the outskirts seem like different worlds
And where some come to fall in love
With all the wrong people
In all the wrong places
At all the wrong times
